Report on Mosque Trashing Prompts Fury in India
Even as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in Washington Monday torepresent an India emerging as a cosmopolitan economic powerhouse, hisparliament sent an ugly reminder that the world's largest democracy hasa dark side: Both chambers of India's parliament have had to beadjourned repeatedly over the past two days amid a furor over leakedfindings of a judicial inquiry into the destruction of the Babri mosquein Ayodhya in 1992. The mosque was destroyed by Hindu extremists inorder to rebuild a Hindu temple that had stood on the same sitehundreds of years earlier, and it triggered a wave of Hindu-Muslimviolence that left more than 2,000 people dead. Seventeen years later,leaks from the report of the Liberhan Commission (named for thepresiding judge) which allegedly held some current leaders of the theopposition Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) culpable for the destruction ofthe mosque provoked scuffles in parliament, offering a reminder thatbeneath the "Shining India" image of modernity the BJP had onceproclaimed lie some ugly, unresolved communal tensions.he Liberhan report had been submitted to Prime Minister Singh on June30, after which the government was required to produce an Action TakenReport (ATR) within six months before introducing the findings fordiscussion in the Parliament. It had planned to raise the topic beforeparliament adjourns in December, but earlier this week, the report wasleaked to the media. Furious members of the BJP demanded that thegovernment immediately release the report in parliament, which Singhauthorized Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to do on Tuesday.
