President Hu meets Canadian PM to cement ties
BEIJING: Chinese President Hu Jintaosaid Thursday he believed Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper'sChina trip would push forward bilateral cooperation to a new level.
In his meeting with Harper in the Great Hall of the People, Hu saidHarper's tour, which marks his first visit to China since he tookoffice in 2006, was "of great significance."
"China is ready to work with Canada tocement dialogues, exchanges and cooperation in various areas, respecteach other's core interests and major concerns, and properly handlesensitive issues between both sides," said the Chinese president.Hu urged both sides to stick to the principle of mutual respect,equality, mutual benefit and non-interference in each other's internalaffairs, and step up healthy and "sustained" development ofChina-Canada friendly and cooperative ties.
Harper said the two countries had "good and frank relationship" anddiplomatic relations which were approaching 40 years, and enjoyedexpanded trade cooperation.
"I am sure the visit will help further those relations in the future," he added.
Harper told Hu he had wanted to visit China since he was a boy.
Harper said his government sticks to the one-China policy andrespects China's territorial integrity, and would like to treat andboost bilateral cooperation from a long-term perspective.
Hu called on the two countries to further expand trade, economic andtechnology cooperation, and oppose protectionism of trade andinvestment.
He also urged to enhance coordination in international affairs andstrengthen cultural links between the two Asia-Pacific countries,especially youth exchanges, to deepen understandings and friendshipbetween the two peoples.
Harper agreed with Hu's proposals to enhance bilateral ties, addinghis country is to work closely with China to fight against tradeprotectionism, promote economic growth, strengthen cultural exchangesand multilateral cooperation.
Canada is glad to see China's growing influence in internationalaffairs, Harper said, urging both countries to boost trade, energy andenvironmental cooperation.
To meet with Chinese leaders to step up trade cooperation andcomprehensive ties are top on agenda of Harper's five-day officialvisit.

哈珀完全同意胡锦涛对发展中加关系的重要主张,表示加中两国有着非常友好的关系,建交近40年来,两国各领域合作取得重大进展和成就。加方奉行一个中国政策,尊重中国领土完整,愿从长远角度看待和发展两国合作关系,对中国在国际事务中发挥更大作用感到高兴。加中两国互补性很强,进一步发展经贸关系潜力巨大,在能源、环境等领域合作大有可为。加方愿同中方一道,反对贸易保护主义,努力促进世界经济增长。进一步加强多边领域合作和人文交流,加强两国人民友好的纽带。
