I am developing a Portal Site. I have tested several commercial templates and all were a good start for what I want to do but I can't help thinking that much of the complication (and heaviness) of the better commercial templates can be eliminated and the few features I need will load much faster.

I want to mimic some of the functionality of a few templates and then use my own Visual Design.
